Just what exactly defines Understated Elegance?

Understated: un-der-stat-ed.  adjective – subtly restrained: achieving its effect through restraint, subtlety, and good taste.
: el·e·gance. noun – 1. style and good taste: a combination of graceful stylishness, distinction, and good taste in appearance, behavior, or movement
2. conciseness: a satisfying or admirable neatness, ingenious simplicity, or precision in something.

In this case, our home owners were after clean lines and timeless looks – subtly and good taste all in one – understated elegance.

To get there, we started by removing the dark, dated green tile on the floor, counter tops, tub deck and shower.  There was just too much of the dark color in the room to allow for the openness of this bath room.  There was 245 square feet of floor and over 200 square feet of tile in the shower – and all of it was the same dark green color.  We then removed the wall paper from the 14 foot high vaulted walls.  The wall-to-wall mirrors were removed and the tub deck was demolished.

Once we had a clean slate to work with, the homeowner provided us with their vision.  We replaced the single shower head crowded in the corner with three temperature controlled shower heads:  A Hand-held with slide bar on one wall,  a standard 7″ head on the opposite wall and a 10″ rain head as the center piece.  Each head is controlled with it’s own volume control.

Crema Marfil marble was used as the backdrop and Dark Emperador marble was used as accents throughout.  Solid 3cm Dark Emperador marble slabs were used for the tub deck, counter tops, shower bench and window sill.  A decorative edge was used for subtle elegance.

Square, under mount sinks were installed to mirror the other clean lines of the room.  The floor was framed with carved Crema Marfil marble base trim with a 1.25″ inlay of Dark Emperador around the room.  The final touch of elegance was in the use of custom water jet listello borders and pencil liners for the tub and vanity back splashes.   Together with the new mirror frames, lights and light hand troweled walls, this room was resurrected from the 90’s and brought into an era of timeless, understated elegance.
